Usually to propose is to ask one's hand in marriage, unless it was in business term (which in this case would be business proposal). A friend of mine made the mistake of saying "When he proposed" while talking to her boyfriend's family (what she meant was when he asked her out - but she didn't know the correct term for it at the time), and it created quite a scene, because the family thought their son had proposed to her. Lol. So "propose" is not a word to be used lightly in the dating world
