Part of the Biography television series from A&E, this documentary reviews the political career and personal life of President John F. Kennedy. During World War II, he commanded a PT boat in the Pacific. When the boat was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer in August 1943, Kennedy, despite serious injuries, led the surviving crew through miles of perilous waters to safety. He married Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953, and the couple had two children. While recuperating from back surgery, Kennedy wrote Profiles in Courage,a study of courageous political acts by eight United States senators, which won a Pulitzer Prize. Kennedy campaigned for and nearly gained the Democratic nomination for vice president in 1956, and four years later was a first-ballot nominee for president. After winning the presidency in 1960 by a narrow margin, Kennedy became the 35th president of the United States, the youngest president ever elected, and the first Roman Catholic president. Kennedy was assassinated by rifle fire while being driven in an open car through Dallas, Texas. The alleged assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, was shot and killed by night club owner Jack Ruby two days later, while under heavy police escort on a jail transfer. Much controversy remains concerning the Kennedy assassination, and speculation about conspiracy theories abounds, despite the Warren Commission's conclusion that Oswald most likely acted alone. ~ John Patrick Sheehan.

All these decades after his assassination at the age of 39, Malcolm X remains one of the most controversial figures in modern American history, and this segment from the A&E Biography series amply demonstrates how he came to be the subject of so much debate. Born to a family that followed the black separatist beliefs of Marcus Garvey, Malcolm Little grew up distrustful of whites, and his father's untimely death, which Malcolm thought was a murder committed by the Ku Klux Klan, solidified his attitudes. Interviews with contemporaries demonstrate how Malcolm drifted into a life of crime, and vowed, during a prison stretch, to devote himself to his newly found religion, the brand of Islam preached by Nation of Islam founder Elijah Mohammed. The rift in the Nation of Islam, in which Malcolm X was pitted against Louis Farrakhan, is capably explained by noted journalist and Malcolm X biographer Peter Goldman, who also describes vividly the assassination of the charismatic leader. Finishing with a bizarre coda, in which a grown daughter of Malcolm was charged with plotting to assassinate Louis Farrakhan in the 1990s, this video does an admirable job of presenting a balanced and coherent view of a controversial man.

Famed Mozart scholars help paint a portrait of the outcast master whose work would revolutionize nearly every area of music. And performances of his work by some of the world's most famous musicians--including conductor Zubin Mehta, violinist Isaac Stern and flutist James Galway--demonstrate why Mozart's sudden death at age 35 is considered by many to be the greatest tragedy in the history of music.

Part of the Biography television series from A&E, this documentary reviews the career and personal life of the founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud. In 1881, Freud received his medical degree and initially sought work at Vienna General Hospital before setting up a private practice for the treatment of psychological disorders. In 1885, Freud went to Paris where he became familiar with the technique of hypnosis. He soon deemed the effects of hypnosis temporary and adopted an alternative method of treatment which involved "free association." He also developed the notion that many phobias were rooted in traumatic childhood experiences.

In 1923, Freud ventured so far as to develop a model of the human mind, consisting of three elements -- the ego, the id, and the superego. During his creatively productive life, Freud published over twenty volumes of theory and clinical studies in which he coined concepts and terms, including libido, subconscious and inferiority complex, that permeated Western culture. In 1937, Freud sought asylum in England following Hitler's annexation of Austria and a ban on psychoanalysis. Freud and his family settled in London until his death from mouth cancer in 1939.

It is rare when a historical narrative keeps readers up late into the night, especially when the story is as well known as Henry Morgan Stanley's search for the missionary and explorer David Livingstone. But author and adventurer Dugard, who's written a biography of Capt. James Cook among other works, makes a suspenseful tale out of journalist Stanley's successful trek through the African interior to find and rescue a stranded Livingstone. Dugan has read extensively in unpublished diaries, newspapers of the time and the archives of Britain's Royal Geographical Society; he also visited the African locations central to the story. Together these sources enable him to re-create with immediacy the astounding hardships, both natural and manmade, that Africa put in the path of the two central characters. Dugard also presents thoughtful insights into the psychology of both Stanley and Livingstone, whose respective responses to Africa could not have differed more. Stanley was bent on beating Africa with sheer force of will, matching it brutality for brutality, while Livingstone, possessed of spirituality and a preternatural absence of any fear of death, responded to the continent's harshness with patience and humility. Descriptions of the African landscape are vivid, as are the descriptions of malaria, dysentery, sleeping sickness, insect infestations, monsoons and tribal wars, all of which Stanley and Livingstone faced. More disturbing, however is Dugard's depiction of the prosperous Arab slave trade, which creates a sense of menace that often reaches Conradian intensity. This is a well-researched, always engrossing book.

Relying heavily on the extraordinary correspondence between the second president and his wife, this joint biography sheds light not only on the characters of two remarkable people, but also on the tumultuous times through which they lived. John and Abigail Adams played a critical role in many of the pivotal events of their era: he was a vociferous participant at the Continental Congress; she was an important eye-witness reporter during the Siege of Boston; he was an important war-time emissary to France. This AMERICAN EXPERIENCE reminds us that the Founding Fathers - and Mothers - were not men and women of marble following a script that made independence and American national success a pre-ordained conclusion, but rather real, flawed, multi-dimensional people, who had no idea how things would turn out.
