[Articel] What Is Plagiarism?

The mere mention of plagiarism has many students gasping for air. Defined broadly, plagiarism is the stealing of another person's ideas or thoughts. These means, to use a really obvious example, that you can't write a paper about gravity and expect people to believe that you came up with that discovery all by yourself. Unfortunately, most examples aren't so obvious. Sometimes, even five words strung together the same way in your paper as in some scholarly article will be called plagiarism. What to do? How can the ordinary student avoid the plague of plagiarism when s/he has to write a research paper?

There are three basic tips students can follow:

1.'''''' Read all of your source material thoroughly before you write a word.

2.'''''' When you sit down to write your paper, never have your source materials in front of you.

3.'''''' Check everything after you're finished. If you've heard something before, cite a reference. Be sure to use either parenthetical citations or endnotes, depending upon the citation style you need to follow.

But so often, even following these steps, students can still go awry. This is why a model paper may help you avoid some pitfalls. A good professional writer will never plagiarize the papers s/he writes, which means that the model itself will be customized and original, written to the specifications of the particular assignment. With a model paper, students can observe how the citation process is supposed to work and emulate the strategies into their own work.
