Grammar-Vocabs, which one is more important?

Seperti yang kita ketahui, praktek bahasa Inggris itu terdiri dari 4 elemen, speaking-writing-listening-reading. Nah, dalam membentuk penguasaan atas ke empat hal tersebut, pasti kita harus menguasai grammar dan vocabularies.

Jadi, yang mana harus kita dahulukan untuk dipelajari, grammar atau vocabs? Bagaimana teman-teman...
 
OK, as what have been known widely, English practice consists of 4 elements, speaking-writing, listening-reading. Then, as an effort to control those four elements, we certainly need to master grammar and vocabularies.

So, which one do you think we need to learn first, grammar or vocabs? Well, guys.....

the question is tricky. it is like asking which one is first egg or chicken? :))

Grammar is show us the structural and vocabulary is the component . the grammar most likely won't exist when there is no word.

In my own opinion (high light please :0)) vocabulary!
 
Personally I agree. However, I really don't like when thinking about vocabs. You know what, there are always new words everyday, everytime I read a book, or explore in the Net, and it really makes me sick.... because I have to open my dict again and again, and yet somehow it's still difficult to memorize those new words.

Grammar, in the other hand, is static. The rules won't change, and if there's any, I think it's still easy to handle. Now, my question is why most Indonesians seem even more afraid of grammar when they're studying english rather than vocabs?

They always look at it (grammar) as a nightmare... Well, what do you think, wnks?

frankly speaking; there is slightly different when we are talking or writing. Talking shouldn't be that difficult because conversation not always composite words but can be a gesture, body language and common way of thinking. when we need to write our mind; honestly not as easy as we speak.

vocabulary is more into how frequent we use the words. I dunno how many words that I know, which is doesn't really matter. When I read an english book, I think as a native. Do not too worry about it; even a native speaker doesn't know every word. That is way they like to have a dictionary/thesaurus in their home.

Compare with other country, I rarely find an Indonesian have Indonesian dictionary.

New words is not pop up often, take time before officially use

That's true... but I think when we deal with vocabularies, we need to read certain specific words again and again in different passages in order to make us familiar with them, comfort and brave enough to use those words (especially in writing). The problem is, sometimes it's not easy for us to meet the same difficult words when we read other different story or articles or anything, which will enable us to refresh our mind about them. That's what I mean of difficulty in vocabularies.

About dictionary... I always open dictionary everyday, english-english and english-indonesia dictionary. They're my life. I also have Indonesian dictionary, but I don't open it regularly. Maybe, that's relevant to what you said that you rarely found an Indonesian has dictionary. Why? Because Indonesian words are not too complicated. I mean, there aren't too much new Indonesian words we can find in a year, and because there are many Indonesian words adapted from other languages, so they're much easier.

Yeah... me too... because you'll need to learn a lot when deals with vocabs.

One example from the problems in studying vocabularies is like the Phrasal Verbs... It's so... so... complicated.

As an Indonesian, it's hard for us to think that the word "call off" means "cancel", or "look over" as "examine", since we already used to follow the meaning of "call" as name or label or identity, and "look" as seeing something with intention, not as "cancel" and "examine".
 
Actually,to be frank.....It gives me so much efforts to learn both, whether it's grammar or it's vocabs....Both of them are difficult,hehehehe.....
 
In your opinion, what is the worst part of grammar? For me... the worst are some modals in perfect form, like: may have, might have, should have and could have + past participle....

It's OK for should have and could have, but I feel really confuse to differentiate the use of may have and might have + past participle...
 
Hehehehe...For me????The worst part of grammar is the fact that I've almost forgotten all of them...It's sometimes puzzling me whether I gotta use d'past participle or past...
 
off course to be able to use any language, you should know as much as vocabulary in that language first. well understanding about the grammar comes the second.
 
Well, there's the minimum set of words , above all else, that you must know for an acceptable level of understanding. Grammar comes second.

Of course, as time passes , this situation is gradually reversed.

yup, rite both of them are important.

both of them are related to support make a good in English.
but when we speak in orally we need vocab to support our speech in english. while grammar we need in writting in a good English. I think thats all

for me, as English department student, if you want to master your English/any other foreign language, you should learn a lot in vocabulary and grammar/structure, but if you want to be an expert in some foreign languages, you should study much about linguistic, literature, and translation... i hope this will answer your question above...
