The best way to build vocabularies

Sometimes when we speak English or write something in English, we face difficulty to find the correct vocabularies for certain words or expressions. If we knew some new words, we'd hesitate to use them, because we're not familiar with these words.

So, is there anyone knows what the best way to improve our vocabularies is?
 
I think the best way is practice English more and more by using new vocabularies, do not feel guilty whenever you made a mistake because you will have experience by making mistake, don't you know that experience is the best teacher?.

Well... it won't be as easy as that when we deal with new words... sometimes, a word might have different meanings in different sentences...
 
Usually I read book like Harry Potter or Eragon in English version or talk English with my girlfriend (and it's fun! believe me!!!)

i agree.. just read manga online or you can watch DVD with english subtitled, i reckon. thats what i do.. and english with GF or BF it would be so much fun.. :D

I personally think that reading is the best way to build vocabularies. And to build your English vocabulary, you read English books instead of Indonesian or Chinese or French or Japanese books xD Not everyone likes manga, nor everyone likes novels, and it can be understood. But at least find something to read, something that challenges you with words you don't know and such. And if you are dilligent enough, you can read a dictionary or a thesaurus in your leisure. That helps a real lot. You can also watch movies, although slangs are used a lot in movies, but that helps too ^^
