Actually this is not really expert tips, but it may help to improve your english skill a bit.

1. Most people who speak english (for non native english speaking) learned from the english song. Although the grammar can't be trustable but it is help.

2. Watch English Movie. Try to not read the subtitle and if you having a problem with your hearing; use the english subtitle instead of Indonesian.

3. Read. Reading some english books or even magazine can be hard. But try to get more ilustrations books such are comic, tabloid or some of thsoe trashy magazine which alway talking about gossips.

4. I always love Britanica Encyclopedia. Try to get one copy. do not bother about the edition, if it possible get the most interactive ones in disc edition not a paper one (you may have to order online). It is fun learning about vocabulary and they will give you picture of each words by clasifications.

5. Speak up! Do not shy to speak. English is actually much easier than you think. try and be confident. no one will laugh or eventhough if there are any, then they are the stupid ones. Grammar is the only last thing you should worry about when you are talking. No problem, no one perfect. If American can't speak and write great English, no one push us to do it so!

6. Have fun and keep learning!

one of the biggest problem in mastering english is lack of vocabulary, since it so much different from our language, english has so many synonims for a single word..

my teacher in senior hi'..scholl gave me a nice tip..he said..once you find a new english word..from any source as bro wnks already told it,it may come from the movie, the song lyric or some thing like that, try to directly write it,he said human is easier to catch some thing in to our mind once we write it down...
after a long-term period i do believe you'll have such a big numbers of vocabulary...

My kids allowed to speak any languages at my place. They speak Mandarin, Germany, Indonesian (it's a must) and also Balinese.

English also we used when we exchanging E-mails. It is great fun to start it.

Try this to your beloved one... Please do not copy words from any songs or movie lines... it is ridicolus! Be honest for what your write!

hi sorry to heard that.. but you know what? I even get less point than what you have now.
Since the theacer in Indonesia concentrating with "an old fashion" way of teaching their pupils... I find it hard to study English until I moved overseas!

You have to find your own weakness Caventy.. Make a list that you are weak. i.e. if you find it hard to remembering vocabulary.. maybe you can try to write it down every neww words that you find in a day in a special book. Put the word and try to make a little sentence and you may put the Indonesian translation.

or since grammar is most feared by the student (I am one of them...) I always use simple present or simple past tense. So it is easier until we used to speak in English.

BTW; how your teacher rated your work? when I was study abroad and we have English test..we are mostly doing paperwork by writing what we need to do for....... (depeanding of the subject) and the teacher will asked to put minimum 3 different types of tenses in one paperwork!

@ Caventy..

Mind you give me the idea how old are you? your English seem fine with me! Maybe you need to strenght them up your convidence...
I believe you are better than what you are right now....

I will be 19th this August..
this is my second semester in my college with "native lecturer".
And my English, is just like this..... it's abjection.. :(

my English subject is about "English for business"
it's all about writing business letter, circular letter, memorandum, press release, mail shots, articles, etc. it's all about grammar, which is really always be my weakness.

I know, my no. 1 weakness is grammar, but it's really difficult to improve that...

OK then use Present tenses and Future present tenses. ... it is always work well. Make your subject, and pick one which you understand most. I believe you have to make a choice from all of those issues! Try as simple as possible.

My mom used to to tell me.... burn the book (in this case an English dictionary) and eat the ashes. Easy and fast. he..he..he...

Sriously, 'english for business' is quite a hard subject, 'coz people will judge you from that simple piece of paper whether they'll do business with you or not. But most people (native English speaker) do understand of the difficulties an ESL person might find in the communication world. For example, people here still not sure if I'm saying the word "CAESAR" or "SCISSOR". :)

Just don't stop, KEEP ON TRYING. And good luck to you.
