Accept Discography




Accept were a German heavy metal band from the town of Solingen, originally assembled in the early 1970s by Udo Dirkschneider. They played an important role in the development of speed metal [1] and Teutonic thrash metal, being part of the German heavy/speed/power metal scene to emerge in the early to mid 1980s along with bands such as Helloween, Running Wild, Grave Digger, Sinner, and Rage. The band's 1983 album, Balls to the Wall, subsequently became their most successful release, featuring its well-known hit with the same title.

Accept is the self-titled debut album released by the German heavy metal band Accept. It was recorded in 1978 and released in early 1979 on the German label Brain Records. Drums on the record are played by Frank Friedrich, but he chose not to pursue a professional music career and so his place was taken by Stefan Kaufmann just prior to the album's release.[1] Bassist Peter Baltes performs lead vocals on "Seawinds" and "Sounds of War".

Guitarist Wolf Hoffmann later remembered the debut as simply a collection of songs the band had worked up over the band's formative years, with no real focus for the band as of yet: "We were just playing songs that we had always played. It was material that had gathered up over the first few months and years of our existence and it was a mixture of all kinds of stuff." He also recalls it selling around 3,000 copies. Lead vocalist Udo Dirkschneider expressed dissatisfaction with the group's first effort looking back on it: "Naturally it was very exciting for us the first time we entered a recording studio, but also disappointing at the same time."[2] Accept would gain better production values and a more cohesive direction on future releases, but the debut was an important early step that gained them the ability to play the neighbouring countries of Belgium, The Netherlands and France for the first time.

Breaker is the third album released by the heavy metal band Accept. It was once again recorded at Delta-Studio in Wilster with Dirk Steffens producing, and was the first Accept album engineered by Michael Wagener. Bassist Peter Baltes sings lead vocal on "Breaking Up Again", and the bridge vocal on "Midnight Highway".

After the unsuccessful attempt at commercialism on I'm a Rebel, Accept decided not to allow any more outside people to influence the band. Pulling together in the midst of a very cold winter,[1] the band members concentrated on making the album they themselves wanted to make. Udo Dirkschneider remembers: "Following our experiences with I'm A Rebel we made it our goal not to be influenced musically by anyone outside of the band this time."[2] Udo believes Breaker is among Accept's best records and marks the beginning of the band's greatest era [3] - the album title would later become the name of Udo's own record company, Breaker Records.

Wolf Hoffmann concurs: "Maybe we knew that the old approach from the record before didn't work very well. So we were saying 'fuck it, let's just do what we think is right. Let's not try to be somebody else, let's not try to have a radio hit anymore.'" The lone possible concession to commercial interests was the upbeat rocker "Midnight Highway", which Wolf described as "sort of a semi-commercial attempt" and "a little too happy for my tastes."

Much of the rest of the album is angry and defiant in tone, especially the profanity-laced "Son Of A Bitch". Udo describes that song's lyrics as "absolutely anti record company."[4] Wolf explains why this particular song was the only one to not have its lyrics printed inside the album: "On the initial release WE thought it would be a good idea to just put "Censored" on the liner notes for the song to avoid any controversy. Well, it turns out it caused MORE controversy that way with everyone wanting to know who censored it."[5] An alternate version titled "Born To Be Whipped" was recorded with tamer lyrics. Wolf explains: "We had to change it because the British were so uptight about this kind of stuff that you couldn't possibly release the record over there with a song called Son Of A Bitch."

Restless and Wild is the fourth album by the German heavy metal band Accept, released in 1982. It was the first Accept album to not be recorded at Delta-Studio, the band moving to Dieter Dierks' studio in Stommeln. It is also the first Accept album in which Udo Dirkschneider sings every track, as well as the first in which manager Gaby Hauke ("Deaffy") gains credits for songwriting. Michael Wagener took engineering and mixing duties once again.

The album is best known for the opening track, "Fast as a Shark", considered among the first speed metal songs.

Another well-known track is album closer "Princess Of The Dawn", a tense Gothic song that Udo describes as "a Cinderella story" and "like a Lord Of The Rings fantasy" with no deep meaning. Wolf Hoffmann and Jan Koemmet achieved the haunting mandolin-like effect by recording the guitars at half-speed, then having it played back at normal speed.[1] Wolf Hoffmann describes the sudden ending as "an idea that didn't work so well."

Udo agrees with the general assessment of Restless and Wild as a landmark heavy metal record, calling it "surely the most important Accept album".[2] Wolf's praise is more reserved, calling it "just another record" and adding, "Looking back maybe we think Fast As A Shark was the first speed metal song ever, but at the time we sorta just had fun and we didn't think it was anything dramatically new. Obviously, maybe what was so cool about this time was that we weren't thinking so much. We were just ballsy and tried to do things without having much to lose."

Versions of the album released outside Germany were issued with a different cover, replacing the picture of burning guitars with a shot of the band live in concert.

Balls to the Wall is the fifth album by the German metal band Accept, released in 1983 in Germany and 1984 in the United States. It is the band's best known and highest-selling album, selling about two million copies worldwide,[1] and is Accept's only record to attain Gold certification in America.

Some of the album's success can no doubt be attributed to the publicity generated from the minor "gay metal" controversy that broke out upon its American release, due to the record's title and front cover being deemed by some as homoerotic, as well as the lyrics to "London Leatherboys" and "Love Child" appearing to concern homosexuals.[1] Guitarist Wolf Hoffmann was dismissive of the controversy, saying years later that "You Americans are so uptight about this. In Europe it was never a big deal...we just wanted to be controversial and different and touch on these touchy subjects, because it gave us good press and it worked fabulously, you know".[2] Drummer Stefan Kaufmann explained that many of the themes on the album were about oppressed minorities in general. "London Leatherboys" was really about bikers, for example: "They're normal people, they just look different and they behave different. But they're normal people, another minority. And 'Love Child' was about gays, true, but it's basically about people who are suppressed.

With 1985's Metal Heart, German metal institution Accept attempted to add catchier choruses and melodies to their high-octane guitar riffing in a clear ploy to crack the American market. Not that this move in any way upset the balance of their thus-far smooth-running metal machine, which had been gaining momentum with every release since the start of the decade. No, Metal Heart was certainly a step toward accessibility, but a cautious one at that — and, frankly, there was no toning down when it came to the lacerated larynx of gifted lead screamer Udo Dirkschneider. You gotta hand it to Acceptmore…, they sure knew how to make an entrance by now, and the apocalyptic title track is about as dramatic as it gets (the operatic "Bound to Fail" comes close), with guitarist Wolf Hoffman taking the helm on a long, mid-song solo excursion containing equal nods to Beethoven (very nice) and Edward Van Halen (get real). First single "Midnight Mover" is next, and along with the even more melodic "Screaming for a Love-Bite," it places obvious emphasis on hooks and melodies (and proved to be the toughest to stomach for the band's more hardcore fans). But despite another strange detour into jazz territory with the bizarre "Teach Us to Survive," Accept still packed amazing power, heaping on their Teutonic background vocals for the ultraheavy "Dogs on Leads" and gleefully pile-driving their way through relentless moshers like "Up to the Limit" and "Wrong Is Right." The brilliantly over-the-top "Too High to Get It Right" finds Dirkschneider screeching like never before, and to cap things off, the band really cooks on "Living for Tonight" — arguably the best track all around. A winning set.

Russian Roulette is a 1986 release by German heavy metal band Accept. It was again recorded at Dierks-Studios, but the band chose to self-produce rather than bring back Dieter Dierks as producer. It would be the last Accept album to feature Udo Dirkschneider as lead vocalist until the 1993 reunion album Objection Overruled.

The album returns Accept to the darker, heavier sound of releases prior to the more commercial-sounding predecessor Metal Heart. Wolf Hoffmann explains the band's decision: "Maybe we were trying sort of go back to our natural and not polished Accept sound with that record. We weren't really all that happy with the polished and clean-sounding Metal Heart. I was sort of very happy with my guitar playing on that record and very happy with my parts, but I remember the whole vibe of the band was at the time that we don't want to go through this again with Dieter Dierks who had produced Metal Heart." Peter Baltes explained the album's title and front cover as an expression of the strong anti-war themes throughout the record, showing war as a game of russian roulette: "it means - go and play the game y’know, what a silly game it is. One will die definately." [1]
The digitally remastered CD edition includes live versions of "Metal Heart" and "Screaming For A Love-Bite" as bonus tracks, taken from the Kaizoku-Ban album.

Eat the Heat is a 1989 release by German Heavy metal band Accept. It was recorded at Dierks-Studios, in Cologne, from September 1988 to January 1989. Although Jim Stacey is presented as guitar player in the band on the album cover, the cover text also states that all guitars are by Wolf Hoffmann.
Accept parted ways with Udo Dirkschneider in order to take a more commercial direction in their music. This is Accept's only album without Udo Dirkschneider as lead vocalist. While many fans had difficulty with both the singer and direction, as time passes this disc is being seen as perhaps Accept's greatest and most accessible offering.[citation needed]
Udo's somewhat dreary band U.D.O. contributes with crowd vocals on "Turn The Wheel". U.D.O. has also covered the song "X-T-C" on the 2001 compilation "A Tribute To Accept II". Accept later recorded "Generation Clash II" based on "Generation Clash" with Udo Dirkschneider on vocals for their 1994 album Death Row.

1995's Death Row is the well-intended, but somewhat flat follow-up to the marginally successful Accept comeback release, Objection Overruled. The group wisely attempted to make a more consistently heavy recording and practically eliminated the mellower dynamics that limited their previous offering. While opting for a more singularly heavy approach was a good decision, the choice of drummer Stefan Kaufmann to produce the record left things sounding a little weak when compared to Objection Overruled (produced by the legendary Dieter Dierks). While the performances are lively, Kaufmann's mixes lackmore… presence, and the band ends up sounding clear, but nondescript. Wolf Hoffman's guitars and Udo Dirkschneider's screams don't grate and churn the way they must in order to capture the particular magic that is Accept's official sonic stamp. As a result, it's difficult to pick standout cuts from Death Row as the material just wasn't done justice in the studio. Perhaps the group wasn't afforded the budget necessary to finish anything more than just a competent recording, but that's what the band, and especially their fans, deserve.

Accept - The Final Chapter (1998)

Recorded during the last stages of the band's reunion tour, the double-disc The Final Chapter was designed as Accept's last album. It's a respectable way to depart, if that's the case, because it finds the group bashing thorugh staples like "Balls to the Wall," "Son of a Bitch," "London Leatherboys," "Restless & Wild" and "The Beast Inside." They occasionally show signs of wear (and that's why it's a good thing that this marks the end of their nearly 20-year career), but hardcore fans will be able to excuse those weaknesses and accept this as a nice testament to one of the heaviest German bandsmore… of the early '80s.

I'm a Rebel is the second album by the heavy metal band`Accept,4recordee in 197; and remeased i~ 1980 ee 1980ain music). It was the first of three consecutive Accept records to utilize DirkbSteffens as producer. Tde album*finds Accept continuing to search for their musical direction, experimenting with a mor` commer#ial sould than $n the debut. BaBsist Peper Baltms once again sings lead vocals on two tracks, the slower-paced songs "Nb Time Tm Lose" Qnd "TheKing".
The tit`e trackis credited to George Alexander, which is a pseudonym for Alex Young, elder bro?her of ?ecord producer and musi"ian Geo"ge Youn and ACDC guitarists Angus Young and Malcolm Young. Guitarist Wolf Hoffmann regalled txe circuistances"that lee Alex Y@ung to work wit? Accept: "He got involved with Accept through the producer. Everybody aTter thefirst record sa d we haVe to have a radio hit. #Guys you need a radio hit and we have just the song for you. Why don't qou try this her`?'" The"song bekame the basis fmr the band's first music video.

Lead singer Udo Dirkschneider believes that thE album gwasn't 4oo insp!red. I hink be#ause ofasome un?uccessful experiments, the band wasn't too solid and the identity wasn'c discovdred yet

The Passport versioo simply`titles ?he reco?d Accepd, as th@ band's1979 se?f-titled debut had not been released in America.
